After 4,000+ years, simplicity comes to flooring product warranties

Posted On October 31st, 2010

Did you know product warranties have been around since 2,100 BC? It’s true, friend. They were offered to shoppers in ancient Babylon and one wonders if they were as confusing and complicated as today’s warranties.

Don’t forget that Babylon was home to the storied “Tower of Babel,” whose builders started speaking in multiple languages and mass confusion resulted.

Well modern shopper, we’ve put an end to the long history of product warranty complication and obfuscation — put an end to the babbling lawyer speak, the towering hoops to jump through and the untranslatable language of product warranties.

Introducing simplicity. A clean, concise and contemporary flooring warranty we call The Pierce Promise. It’s our newest way to better serve you.

The Pierce Promise can be summed up in just eight powerful words: You Stand On It. We Stand Behind It. There aren’t any qualifying conditions, no confusing exceptions, no tiny type and hidden meanings. Our Promise is written on one page and covers every flooring product we sell.

The Pierce Promise doesn’t diminish or lessen the manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the product. And it doesn’t cost you one penny, or shekel (Babylonian coin).

Feel free to call us for more information or to ask a question. You can always learn more on our website.

Creating an Attractive Universal Design Bath

For many of us, bathroom design is about picking the right tile and colors. However, for people of limited accessibility, a functional bathroom is much more complicated.

As the baby-boomer generation ages, more and more people need baths that provide for people of limited mobility. At the same time, they don’t want to sacrifice design. Thanks to the efforts of many bathroom fixture manufacturers, that combination is possible.

In this photo, we have a bathroom that is extremely wheelchair-friendly while still having a strong sense of style.

Let’s start with the sink. Providing a sink with clear space underneath allows easy wheelchair access. The towel rack has a stylish and unusual feel while working well for someone who is seated.

Take a look at the storage unit toward the back. Its wheeled design keeps it out of the way until needed, particularly important for someone manuvering a wheelchair. The mirrors over the sink are too high for a seated person, but open the cabinet to the left and you will find a mirror set on the inside of the door – at the perfect height and position to use when seated.

Style and function merge well in this bath. Have you considered adding some more accessible features to one or more of your bathrooms? Your salesperson will have some useful suggestions for designing a bath that combines the best of both goals.

Flooring Company Joins Allstate, State Farm and GEICO as Great “Insurer”

The Story of Wood Flooring

Posted On October 17th, 2010

HUSTRF-00002462-001Wood flooring adorns many homes and hearths worldwide. Let’s take a look at its history and usage through the centuries.

In the Baroque era (1625-1714), wooden floors became the flooring of choice, replete with beautiful patterns and French parquetry. It is surprising that hardwood’s flooring potential hadn’t been recognized till the 17th century. Hand scrubbed, sanded, stained and polished, it graced the homes of only the rich and affluent.

The latter part of the colonial era (1607-1780) in America witnessed a more common usage of wooden planks as flooring material which unlike those mentioned above were not sanded or polished. Function rather than style was important in this situation. Wood planks replaced dirt floors, warming a cabin and allowing pioneer women to keep their homes cleaner.

The tongue and grove hardwood flooring configuration began to make an appearance around the early 19th century, though only in homes which could afford them. Most homes simply sported wooden planks of varying widths nailed together.

It wasn’t until quite late in the American Victorian Era (1840-1910) that wooden floors began to be mass produced in factories. Ads by factories at that time claimed that “Any one familiar with the use of a saw, hammer and varnish brush can lay and finish them. A servant of average intelligence can keep parquetry floors as if they were newly laid with but little effort.”

The tongue and groove pattern of installation became quite popular by the Edwardian era (1901-1914) and wood reigned the flooring circuit till the late 1920’s-early 1930’s which was when other flooring options such as linoleum and cork floor began to make an appearance. Newer varnishes to increase hardwood durability, a characteristic hardwood flooring manufacturers used to emphasize its use, came into the picture.

World War II brought the wood flooring industry to its knees and worker pay dropped drastically. For nearly 30 years the industry fought for survival. When it could gain a foothold, it came back into the flooring arena with a vengeance. Today, wood flooring is often a major selling point for a home.

The floor which bears your weight at the moment may or may not be wood, but there is no denying the fact that wood floors are a rich addition to the flooring industry. The next time you step onto a hardwood floor, take a minute out to appreciate its connection to the past.

Isn’t It Time Flooring Product Warranties Take A Stand?

Posted On October 14th, 2010

You’ve been there. You spend the time to shop for a product, finally find one that’s perfect for you and your budget, and then you ask about the warranty. Written by lawyers, for lawyers, it’s full of conditions and exceptions, fine print and bold face exclusions. Where, you ask, is the commitment? When will anyone take a stand?

Well, dear shopper, commitment is right at home at all our stores, and “taking a stand” is literally what our warranty does. Called The Pierce Promise, our warranty can be summed up in just eight powerful, simple words: You Stand On It. We Stand Behind It.

That’s it in a nutshell. There aren’t any qualifying conditions, no confusing exceptions, no tiny type and hidden meanings. Our Promise is written on one page and covers every flooring product sold at Pierce Flooring & Design.

The Pierce Promise doesn’t diminish or lessen the manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the product. It even covers Pierce Flooring products already installed in homes. (We’re committed to our past customers, too.)

And while we’re firm believers in putting our money where our mouth is, you don’t have to. The Pierce Promise doesn’t cost you one penny extra.

Bank on it!

Making Your Bathroom Feel Larger

Posted On October 12th, 2010

PIXMRF-00004373-001Would you like to redo your bathroom so that it feels larger and newer? This photo shows how one traditional bath was re-worked to make the most of its space without actually adding any square footage.

The makeover started by replacing the old bathtub and shower curtain with a walk-in shower and frameless glass surround. This instantly added about two feet to the feel of the bath. Frameless shower surrounds almost disappear in a bathroom, and elements such as the horizontal stripes etched on this glass add an inviting design element.

To connect the space further, the same tile was used across the bathroom walls and throughout the shower, continuing to eliminate a sense of separation. The matching tile floor also carries through with the theme.

By keeping walls white and having white bath fixtures, the consistency adds to a sense of space. With a pedestal sink rather than a vanity, the bath stays fresh looking and the additional visible flooring adds to the larger perceived size.

By following some simple guidelines, this bathroom remodel almost doubled the perceived space without actually adding a foot. What can you do to make your bathroom feel larger?

The Pierce Promise offers a clear, simple, universal warranty that addresses all service issues. It doesn’t diminish or lessen the manufacturer’s warranty that comes with the product. It even covers Pierce Flooring products already installed in homes. (We said it was revolutionary.)

How to Remove Pumpkin Stains from Carpet

Posted On October 8th, 2010

TETRRF-00024111-001It’s getting close to that time of year! Pumpkin carving time!! This year, before you get started – take a few moments to bookmark or print this page so that in the event that you have a pumpkin mess during your carving, you won’t have to worry.

Below are some easy to follow instructions for removal of pumpkin stains from carpet.

Detergent Solution – Mix one fourth (1/4) teaspoon of a liquid dishwashing detergent per one (1) cup of lukewarm water. NEVER USE A STRONGER CONCENTRATION! Thorough rinsing is necessary to remove detergent residues that may cause rapid soiling. It may be necessary to rinse with warm water several times to completely remove residues. (See Residue Precautions.) Care should be used in selecting a detergent. Never use a laundry detergent of any type, because laundry detergents may contain optical brighteners (flourescent dyes) that dye the fiber. Do not select an automatic dishwashing detergent because many contain bleaching agents that destroy dyes and some fibers.

Vinegar Solution – Mix one (1) cup of white vinegar per two (2) cups of water. White vinegar is a 5% acetic acid solution. It is used most often to lower the alkalinity caused by detergent solutions or alkaline spills.

Warm Water – Lukewarm tap water should be used in most cases to rinse the cleaning solutions from the fiber. Failure to completely rinse the solutions from the fiber may cause accelerated soiling.

Ammonia Solution – Mix one (1) tablespoon of household ammonia per cup of water. Please note: Be aware that ammonia, if used improperly, can cause a color change. Be sure to test a hidden area.

When in doubt , Call a Professional – Professional cleaners have the ability and the equipment to use more aggressive cleaning solutions to remove stubborn spills. Always consider consulting a professional cleaner regarding any spot removal question.
