What’s New in Linoleum?

Posted On September 29th, 2011

Linoleum flooring is one of the most resilient flooring options available today. Linoleum became popular during the World War II because of its affordability. But it slowly faded out of limelight because of many shortcomings.  Today, linoleum is enjoying a revival in the world of flooring because of many innovations and technological improvements, and most of all, because of its environment friendly nature. Linoleum flooring requires natural ingredients to produce, which are easily renewable.

Apart from the classic retro look of the linoleum flooring, there are many contemporary designs, patterns and colors available. They are not available in many trendy and bright colors, and several graphic patterns to suit your taste. These latest additions to the world of linoleum flooring were unimaginable before. For example, nowadays color such as firebird red, oak brown, silver grey and bamboo tan are available in Linoleum to adorn your floors. In the retro section, Linoleum flooring also provided in marble patterns. Also these days, people prefer the warm earthly tones of Linoleum flooring, reminding them of its organic properties.

There is sufficient reason to say that linoleum flooring is in vogue again because of these new advancements in design and durability. Linoleum flooring can last for decades if maintained properly. Since they are resilient, linoleum floors are comfortable to stand on for long periods of time; for example in the kitchen. Also they are water resistant, so can be used in bathrooms.

Go for linoleum flooring if you are a friend of the environment, and you want a durable floor at a reasonable cost.

Photo helps with Room Planning

Posted On September 27th, 2011

Are you having trouble deciding on the right layout for your living room? Sometimes it’s difficult to see the full design of a space. One way to help you look at your home with new eyes is to take photographs. Step back to give the broadest view or use a camera lens to include the entire space in one shot.

Once you do this, you may find that something that looks good close up doesn’t work as well from a distance. This room is a good example.

The sofa and art work very well together. The mix of neutrals with a few pops of color creates a warm and inviting feel. The concrete floor is an effective choice for a modern space, and with that cool grey flooring, an area rug really makes a difference.

Just as this photo shows what works well, it also shows the design mistakes. There are two in this room: the choice and placement of the area rug and the placement and accessorizing of the coffee table.

Picture this room with a lighter area rug in a warmer lighter shade, and positioned with the length running parallel to the sofa. Add a dark wood coffee table with a shape similar to the one in the photo but with fewer accessories.

With a more limited budget, simply turning the rug and table 90 degrees and moving them closer to the sofa would be a great improvement. But whether you want to make a large change or a small one, taking a photo gives you the insight to make a room what you want it to be.

Create a Feminine Bedroom

Posted On September 15th, 2011

This room is inviting and feminine. The style and the feel it creates are not expensive. Instead, it requires planning and effort. Let’s take a look at what you can do to achieve the same look for yourself or a daughter.

The bed itself is simple, but soft linens make it feel special. The head of the bed is upholstered. You can recreate this look if you have minimal skill with wood and fabric. Take an old headboard, cover it in foam and wrap that in batting to create a smooth surface. Take your chosen fabric and wrap the batting, stapling on the back to keep everything smooth. Then attach it to the bed and you’re done.

The two pillows are white bolsters given a sleeve of floral fabric in peaches and soft gold. The upholstered stool and roses, along with the three simple plates on the wall, echo those colors beautifully.

It’s surprising to see the lavender carpeting, but this is a good example of how tone compensates for changes in hue. Even though this is the only purple in the room, the light tone fits well with the rest of the décor, allowing the carpet to work in the room.

The canopy is simpler than it looks. Use two curtain rods that complement the room’s design attached to the ceiling at the foot and head of the bed. Experiment with wrapping and draping light sheer fabric until you have the look you want. Don’t be skimpy or the end result will be disappointing. There’s a nice balance on the amount and drape of the fabric. It may take a bit of work but eventually you can end up with a bedroom as inviting and feminine as this one.

Baby Soft Flooring

Posted On September 13th, 2011

Soft and comforting, clean and inviting, we want our children to have just the right environment to play, learn and grow. And where do children spend lots and lots of time? On the floor.

If you have children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews or the children of friends who visit, do you have soft inviting flooring for them?

Children live in bare feet when they’re not in footie sleepers or socks. They move along on their bellies, start to crawl and learn to walk on floors. They play, read, roughhouse, run, and nap on floors when they’re just so tired.

Have you thought about selecting your carpeting or rugs with your hands as well as your eyes? Every fiber and finish, every variety of carpeting and rug has its own feel on your hands or on little feet. Are little toes going to love digging in to your carpet or rug? Take a minute to rub your fingers over the samples to help you decide on comfort as well as color.

As children grow to walk and run, falls are inevitable. A good cushion keeps carpeting wear to a minimum and makes your footfalls more comfortable. It also helps create a soft landing pad for the tiny ones in your life. Does your carpet cushion help keep those falls gentle and easy?

Keeping your home safe and inviting for the children in your life is an important part of creating a home for many people. If children run and play in your home, plan for it with flooring that shows that you are prepared for the little ones you love.

Strong Flooring Equals Strong Design

Posted On September 8th, 2011

In this room, you notice the flooring before anything else. That’s because the room was designed around this dramatic wood choice. Have you considered a vivid wood floor such as this one? Let’s take a look at why this room works so well.

The floor itself has strong variations in color and tone. The darkest shades match the ebony-toned furniture, and the lightest resemble unstained maple. In between, reds, browns and gold play a role. The pattern of color and wood length is completely random although balanced. This floor almost feels like an abstract painting.

With this dramatic a floor, the choice of ebony for the furniture shows design smarts. It’s never a good idea to have various elements in a room fighting for attention. The straightforward dark tones allow the furniture to hold their own in a completely different way from the flooring. Together, they create an impact that neither would be able to produce alone.

Thick chair cushions in a strong red hue pull the flooring tones up toward the table. Red is the most noticeable color in the flooring, and the cushions demonstrate that. Several of the accessories also accent red and the accessory choices are simple, a wise decision given the strength of the color palette in this room.

Finally, choosing ivory walls and white baseboards keep the attention toward the middle of the room, particularly smart as this space is part of an open home design. One possible improvement would be to add two-inch wood blinds that match the furniture with floor-length curtains that emphasize the same red as the curtains.

Dining rooms can handle this level of drama. Why not be daring and let your space show a personality to match this amazing floor?

Area Rug Helps Space Feel Cohesive

Posted On September 6th, 2011

It can be difficult to clearly define separate spaces in a home with an open floor plan. This townhouse benefits from the limited wall dividers, but design choices are needed to help people understand where each functional area starts and ends.

Certain choices such as maintaining the same flooring – concrete – and wall paint – white – keep this townhouse feeling cohesive in its design. The narrow space and limited square footage benefits from these design decisions. The connection across the space makes it feel open and larger.

At the same time, there have to be some clear definitions between the spaces. In this townhome, the designer used ceiling height, wood panels on the wall and area rugs to help clarify where each room stands.

The living room shows its boundary by the position of the sofa. All the furniture looks into the room. The right wall indents to form a hallway to the dining room with wooden panels to add additional separation. The kitchen is on the left across from those panels.

Finally, the dining room has several tools to position it clearly. First, the area rug lays out the edges of the space. The simple cream tone matches the chair cushions and keeps the design theme clear. The rectangular table is consistent with the long contemporary chandelier and long low centerpiece.

When you decorate your home, think about the shape of each room and the transitions from one space to another. Then use design to make every space stand out.

Green Flooring Trends

Posted On September 1st, 2011

Everybody is doing their own little way in helping conserve the environment and when it comes to going green, the flooring industry is not to be left behind as they have started to manufacture eco friendly flooring that is sustainable, recyclable, and does not contain any harmful materials to the environment.

Some of the eco-friendly flooring that is growing in popularity now includes:

Bamboo. Bamboo is the fastest growing wood plant so it has a lot of resources making it a good alternative to cutting down trees to make hardwood floors. After the bamboo has been manufactured for flooring, it becomes hard enough to be made into floor planks. One good thing about bamboo is its lighter blonde coloring that gives a natural feel for your wood floors.

Cork. Did you know that there are a lot of famous buildings that have cork flooring just like First Congregational Church in Chicago and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC to name just a few. Cork is a good alternative to hardwood floors as it does not harm the trees when being harvested as it is made from the bark of cork oak tree, which is renewable. Another advantage of cork is it is very easy to maintain. It is also non-toxic, and is mold and mildew resistant.

Recycled Wood. Recycled or reclaimed wood floors are made from old wood made to look new and turning it into wood planks. Recycled wood have the benefits of old growth timber so it is durable and can last for decades.

Indeed there are a lot of options for greener flooring and you will surely find one that will best fit your flooring requirements.
