Don’t Forget About the Kids at Christmas Dinner

Posted On December 22nd, 2011

While we are in holiday mode we often think about the meal we will be preparing, if the Christmas tree needs a bit more garland, and which linens we will use at on the dining room table. We don’t often think about the card table where the kids will be regulated to during Christmas dinner. Take a few moments to thoughtfully decorate their dining area.

Use bright and colorful plates and placemats. Heavy-duty plastic plates look ceramic but can withstand being dropped.

Use lunch size napkins and dessert forks and spoons. Little hands will appreciate such thoughtful gestures.

Candy cane straws are fun and playful.

Centerpieces for the kid’s table should not include breakable items or water. Use a foam ball and stick in artificial glittered candy canes. Add evergreen from a fresh trimmed tree.

Don’t be afraid to use lots of patterns on the kid’s table. Plaid and polka dots are definitely a “do”.

Create place cards by adding a tag to a candy cane or make sugar cookies with each child’s name written in frosting. You’ll be rewarded with lots of sweet, sticky kisses.

Ask the Expert

Posted On December 20th, 2011

While many of us want to believe that we know just about everything, sometimes we do need to admit to ourselves that we should listen to the experts. As you start to do research about flooring projects or what floors you should install in your new home we have just the resource for you.

Located on our website is a fun place called “Ask the Expert”. Here is a list of questions asked by previous customers that we think will be helpful for you. If you can’t find your particular question you can submit it on-line and we’ll answer you back.

Here are few examples:

Q. What materials are best to use in a room meant mainly for active kids?

A. Sturdy upholstery, easy to clean flooring, soft surfaces and no hard edges. When using carpet, consider looped pile or tightly twisted textures with Stain Resistance.

Q. How do I transition different types of flooring from one room to another?

A. A threshold cover is used when there are height changes in the flooring. Consult with your flooring specialist about a more decorative transition that can be designed depending on your specific type of flooring.

Q. I am interested in a carpet with a formal look, which styles should I consider?

A. A Saxony carpet with its plush velvet appearance would be the perfect carpet style to achieve your formal look. A pattern carpet can also add additional style to a formal room.

Please visit “Ask the Expert” as it will provide you with great advice from people who really do know everything. Everything about flooring, that is.

Celebrate Your Family!

Posted On December 13th, 2011

Why not personalize your Christmas decorations this year? Family events, your last name – these are just some fun ways to be intentional with your decorating.

Remember how Grandma would tape the Christmas cards she received to the back of her front door, or around an archway in her home. Why not use a monogrammed card holder to display your Christmas greetings?

You are going to hang a wreath on your front door, right? Well why not use a custom monogrammed wreath holder? It’s an elegant statement that makes your entranceway unique and festive.

Serve drinks, hot apple cider or mulled wine in monogrammed glassware.

Celebrate family events with personalized ornaments. There are many places that will create mementos to commemorate weddings, babies and anniversaries.

Jazz up your powder room with monogrammed hand towels.

While you are in “monogram mode” why not create customized note pads as stocking stuffers?

And don’t forget to personalize your Christmas stockings….even one for Fido.

In Stock Carpet Specials

Posted On December 9th, 2011

Verragio Godiva Chocolate, Unordinary Sandstone and Captured Heart Sculpture. These are just a few carpets that are part of Pierce Flooring’s in stock specials. If you are thinking about replacing your carpet or adding carpet to your home be sure to check the website to see if you like any of the carpets that are featured.

But before you buy any carpet please be sure that you are choosing the best type for your situation. Here is a quick guide to help you easily find the type of carpet you should install.

CASUAL AND HIGH TRAFFIC

If your style is casual, Textured carpet is your best bet. This is a very popular cut pile carpet that has alternating twists of yarn creating a two-tone appearance. Textured carpet does a great job of hiding footprints and vacuum marks. They are ideal for today’s active families and are available in a broad range of prices.

For high traffic areas area, a frieze carpet may be the way to go. This cut pile style has a very high twist level, meaning each strand of yarn is twisted so tightly that they actually curl over at the end. This creates a textured surface with a knobby appearance, and a carpet of high durability. These carpets are great performers in high-traffic areas and can go anywhere in your home. They also hide footprints and are available in various pile heights.

If you have lots of activity in your home or area that you are re-carpeting, choose a Looped carpet. This style of carpet is often referred to as a Berber. Berbers are really big bulky yarns. Looped carpets are very durable and are ideal for casual, active family rooms. they come in solid colors, Berber fleck and patterns. This carpet hides traffic patterns well but be advised that this style may make seams more apparent. Still, this is a great all-purpose carpet.

If you need a carpet that is patterned try a Cut & Loop. Cut & Loop is a combination of cut and looped yarns that create pattern effects by the variation in surface textures. Like looped styles, these carpets are low profile and thus perform well, however, sometimes their seams are visible. This style can be used in casual and traditional rooms and are available in many patterns including fun geometrics and formal botanicals. Their distinctive carved appearance and multiple colors do a good job of hiding stains and standing up to traffic.

FORMAL AND ELEGANT

For a more formal, beautiful feeling you may want to choose a Saxony carpet. This style has a smooth, soft, velvet plush look. Each yarn has a uniform twist and finish, making this carpet the perfect solution for a master bedroom, dining room or a formal living room. This style is not a good choice for high traffic areas or rooms with active kids as it shows footprints and vacuum marks.

Another carpet that looks beautiful but is not suited for high traffic areas is Cable. Cable style carpet is constructed of thicker and typically longer yarn. The style is very comfortable underfoot and is beautiful in a bedroom or living room. Keep in mind that this style is better suited for rooms without a lot of activity as it can matte and crush with heavy foot traffic.

So there you have it, all the types of carpet to choose from depending on your lifestyle. Once you have decided on which kind of carpet to use please visit us for more information and make sure to check out our in-stock specials.

Make Your House A Holiday Show Home

Posted On December 7th, 2011

Walking around a show home is always inspiring, isn’t it? It makes you think that your home should always look so clean, so perfect and well decorated. During the holidays especially, why don’t we take a few ideas from a staged home to make our homes more inviting?

A pine cone centerpiece, an evergreen wreath or just a pot of cider simmering on the stove will create a warm and festive feeling.

Wherever you place your Christmas tree, match your tree décor to your color scheme. If you have a cool colored living room use snowflakes, silver candles and blue glass ornaments. If you have an earthy colored room go with tones in cranberry, forest green and gold.

Christmas is a time for sparkle. Use glittery, glass ornaments to adorn the tree. Ornaments in bowls also make stunning (and easy) centerpieces. For an even better effect, mix ornaments with pine cones and pods.

Use garland and ribbon to decorate stair railings and banisters. Intertwine fruits, feathers, pinecones and mini glass ornaments throughout garland for a designer look. Hang a few tasteful ornaments from your mantle or hang some mistletoe in an arched hallway. And speaking of your fireplace – turn it on!

Wreaths are a great way to welcome guests. Go the simple yet stunning route by letting the beauty of a fresh evergreen wreath take center stage. Hang the wreath with patterned ribbon and add in a few pine cones for texture and interest.

Light fixtures are a great place to add extra holiday cheer. Wrap glittering leaves around a chandelier’s base.

These few simple ideas will help make your house a holiday show home!
